Augusta Selected for a GA Dept. of Transportation Gateway Grant

Mayor Deke Copenhaver announced that the City of Augusta has been selected to receive a $50,000 GATEway Grant from the Georgia Department of Transportation. The GATEway program uses revenue collected from vegetation removal in front of outdoor advertising signs to improve the roadside landscape. The program awarded $1,324,942 in 2009 to 37 local government entities. Augustas grant will be used to enhance the right-of-way of Doug Barnard Parkway in front of the Messerly Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Mayor Copenhaver explains that funds will be used to beautify the right-of-way in front of the Messerly plant beginning at the intersection of Doug Barnard Parkway and Lock and Dam Road and extending north. This will be coupled with a similar project outside the right-of-way in front of the plant which will give a much improved appearance.

(The Gateways & Corridors Urban Area Master Plan Implementation Team assisted with the grant application and will assist with implementation of this grant as needed.
